A few girlfriends visited for a couple days while I was at the beach, and we had the best, best time! Laughed our heads off. You cannot buy this kind of stress reliever. One of our friends is blonde, and she had a couple of “blonde” moments that we teased her unmercifully about. The condo building has a penthouse, and while going up to our Floor 9, she sees the button marked “PH.” She says, “PH, is that what you push to use the telephone?” I wasn’t with them at the time, but they died laughing and teasing her, and while at dinner that night, they say, “Oh, we forgot to tell you what happened today!” And from that same elevator ride, she goes to the wrong door on Floor 9, trying to get in with a cart of furniture I had painted, and as she knocks and scratches at the door, these golfers open it up with a “Well, hey, honey, whatcha got for us!” They were next door, so they teased her all week as well.
While they were telling this story, I was reminded about one of my biggest “blonde/redhead” moments. A bunch of court reporter friends and I had gone to New York City for a seminar, and for some reason, I had given one of my friends a charge card and my driver’s license to pick something up at a store for me, and she had forgotten to give it back and realizes it when she gets to the airport. It still hadn’t occurred to me. When she gets out her own driver’s license at the airport, it hits her that I’m going to need my driver’s license to get on the plane, so she calls and leaves me a voice mail that she is leaving my license and charge card with Will Call and I can pick it up at the ticket counter.
I get to the airport, go straight to the United check-in and say I need to speak with Mr. Call. The person I’m talking to says she doesn’t know a Mr. Call. I say, “Oh, yeah, I’m sure he works here, because my friend told me she had left my driver’s license with him.” She asks a couple people – and yes, crazy day at the NYC airport, of course, lines a mile long – and they say they don’t know Mr. Call either. I say, “It’s William Call – perhaps he works in a customer service division.” They make some phone calls as I wait and try not to panic as my time is wasting away. They come back and say they can’t find anyone by that name.
I am getting close to the time where I’m going to miss my flight if I don’t get in a line somewhere and start getting processed. My friend is still on her flight home and not able to be reached. I listen to her voicemail again to make sure I got the name right. I say, “She says she left them with a guy named Will Call and I should just go to him.” One of them still looks puzzled, but the other lady begins to laugh. She’s like, “Will call.” I’m like, “Yeah, Will Call.” She says, “Oh, no, honey, it’s will call, an area where you can leave things and it means you’ll call for it.” I am still in William Call mode, so I just stare at her before it hits me. I am laughing right now as I type this but I cannot remember if then I laughed or just stared at her as she directs me to the counter clearly labeled “Will Call.”
While waiting to board my plane (which I did not miss), I call my friend and leave her a big message of “You WILL NOT BELIEVE what I did!” She, of course, tells everyone, including her judge, Judge Holliday, who is such a wonderful man who I had worked with many times. When Tom became judge and I started going with him to the Judicial Conferences, the first thing Judge Holliday says is, “Hey, Teresa, you still looking for William Call?”
As I’m telling this story at dinner to the girls and they are all laughing at me – no lie – Tom texts me and says, “I’m at Judicial Conference and just had dinner with Judge Holliday – he says to tell you hi.” I was shocked he didn’t say “He wants to know if you’ve found William yet,” but the timing was priceless!
Moral of the story is, what goes on in Vegas may stay in Vegas, but what goes on in New York or Myrtle Beach gets told to the world…..
