(Proverbs 22:6)  “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.”

“And Joshua said unto all the people [of Israel], … choose you this day whom ye will serve; … but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” (Josh. 24:2, 15).

He spilled the beans!

My husband turned 66 this week - can you believe I am married to such an old man?  It kind of floors me to think that in a few short years, I will be married to a 70-year-old!  We celebrate our anniversary this upcoming week as well - 21 years.  Hardly seems possible.  The other day I came home, and it was a cold winter evening, and I just was craving bacon and eggs.  I ask Tom if he wants some, and he does, so I get it ready and we sit down to a "breakfast for dinner" meal.  I'm eating my scrambled eggs, and I say, "Can you believe that something that just dropped out of a chicken's rear end could taste so good?"  Tom looks at me, silent, looks at me again, and says, "I really could have gone all day without hearing that."  I'm like, "Really?  It disturbed you so bad?"  He says, "Well, we are at the dinner table."  Well, duh.

I die laughing.  I'm like, "Okay, so is this one of those times where I should be glad we're married, because if I had said that when we were dating, you would have never asked me out again?"  He begins to laugh and says, "Well, it probably is."  I said, "Well, too bad, you're stuck with me now."

Do you ever think those things?  There are so many moments in a marriage that are so comical or so awful or just so boring that you think in your mind, "And I chose to marry this?"  Tom is such a Type A on the bench - I hear it all the time - but in our marriage, he is the easiest man to be married to.  This is now - wasn't always this way - but I thank God he is so accomodating! Our lives are so fast-paced, we're going a million miles an hour in every direction, and he never complains that I don't cook or I didn't get something done he asked me to or I spent too much money or I didn't call and check in or all those things that can come up in a marriage.  I am so blessed to have him as my husband.

Tom has ALWAYS made me feel like I was the best thing that ever happened to him - he tells me that often - and he constantly praises me to others rather than beats me down.  That is a gift, and I treat it as such.  We are not big gift-givers - we haven't exchanged birthday or anniversary or Christmas or Valentines gifts in several years - but the gifts he gives me are love and commitment and faithfulness and praise.  And he allows me to buy myself whatever I want (sometimes better than a gift :)

All that said, Tom can be totally dense in certain areas.  For instance, when Jimmy came to sit down with him and ask for Talia's hand in marriage, the instant Tal gets home that evening, he tells her, "Well, I had a nice talk with Jimmy tonight."  She was kind of expecting the proposal, but she certainly did NOT want to know Tom and Jimmy had had "THE TALK!"  I was ready to kill him - I mean, truly ready to kill him.  What in the world?  He acted like he hadn't done anything wrong.  I was off the charts.  And yes, he certainly didn't endear himself to his new son-in-law either!

Well, speaking of him spilling the beans, yesterday morning, I was in my office with my machine taking down a transcription job, playing it out loud.  He goes by the door to leave for work, waves as he can hear I'm busy, and then I hear a crash of some sort outside the door, but it was trash day, and I figured he just knocked something over with the trash cans.  I keep pounding on my machine, ignoring whatever was going on out there.  He comes back in the door, says nothing, flies around the corner toward the bedroom.  Some time goes by, and back he comes, flying back out the door.  Then back in.  He stands at the door to my office, waits for me to take a breath, and says, "I need some help.  I've had a little incident.  I need you to come."

I follow him out to the garage and below is the sight I see.  The picture does not do it justice!  He had placed a pot of beans on the trash can overnight to cool them down to be put in freezer containers (he makes these beans like every two weeks and eats them every day - and yes, that's a whole other story!).  Anyway, he has had a carpal tunnel surgery in the last few weeks and his hand isn't operating as it should, so he says he was just moving the beans to the basement refrigerator and his hand gave way, resulting in beans flying EVERYWHERE!  They're all over the side of the trash can, all over the floor, on the back wall of the garage, on the CEILING, on Laney's stroller that was there, on the rug....

I said, "Did they get on you?"  He's like, "Yeah, that's what I've been doing, changing clothes!"  Oh my.  I will never get on him for "spilling the beans" again without seeing this sight in my mind.  His suit jacket and tie were pretty much destroyed, although I tried washing them and we'll see how much they shrunk.  All that said, bean-spiller and all, I thank God for the husband He gave me, one who prays with me and praises me and keeps me in line.  Happy birthday, Tom!
