“He performs wonders that cannot be fathomed, miracles that cannot be counted” (Job 5:9).
We had just bought a house in PA (about an hour from where we had lived for four years) and we told our kids “This is where we plan to stay until you grow up and get married.” We were happy there, liked our neighborhood, our church, had friends and Ken’s job was going well. During this time, his boss, who was nearing retirement age, was seeking a way to get to move back to the Inland Northwest where he once lived. He was wanting to take employment so that a company would pay for the moving expense. Ken happened to know some people who worked at the Trentwood, Kaiser plant, so he made some calls on his boss’ behalf.
He, the boss, did get hired with Kaiser and made the move. Shortly afterwards, he started calling for Ken to come there also. Ken explained that he wasn’t looking to move – we had never been to the State of Washington or even close to it. After some “negotiating,” the company agreed to fly Ken and I both out for the interview. We saw it as a “free vacation” – what could it hurt to just go “look.” Well, the week before I had hosted a Home Interior party and the items were to be delivered the weekend we were to be away. I called the party guests and explained what was happening and told them I would deliver their items the following week.
We went, an offer was made …. with the same salary Ken was currently making but a nice position. We prayed about it and totally were at peace believing that we had not looked for a new job but if God was in it, He would open and close the necessary doors. The housing market was basically dead and there was no profit to be made in real estate at that time. We had just lived in our house around a year. When we got home, I was literally unlocking the door and the phone was ringing inside – I rushed in, grabbed the phone and a lady who I would describe as a stranger/acquaintance (who had attended the Home Interior party with one of my friends) was on the line and wanted to know how the interview went and what we decided. I told her we didn’t know yet – she then says, “I want you to know that we will buy your house, pay you everything you have in it (for any improvements you made plus what you paid for it) because we tried to buy it a year ago and you beat us to it.”
WOW – we felt it had to be God who would open such a door as this…. Never put up a For Sale sign, never told anyone of our possible decision, never even took our shoes off before He showed us that He had everything under control. Proverbs 3:5 “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding.”
We made that move and lived outside of Spokane, WA for 10 years and it is there that I reflect back to now. I was dreading all the things that occur with a move, especially with one so far away – finding a new grocery store, church, bank, friends, doctors and etc. We went to a new church of over 500 people the first week we moved into our house. As we entered the door, I was greeted by a lady who took the time to talk to me, invited me to a ladies retreat and even invited me, a complete stranger, to share a room with her and some of her friends. Two complete strangers who became lifetime friends (thanks, Annette) and whose way of showing me Jesus with “skin” when I was literally thousands of miles away from my extended family – she and her friends and family became our “family” and friends.
I consider this a miracle because I could have experienced years of loneliness, depression, isolation and more, but instead, I believe I was welcomed to Spokane by an angel who was just the human God used to accomplish what He wanted for me/us. Jeremiah 29:11-13 NIV “I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future ….”
